Peel Ports Logistics X Allelys' Lostock Energy Partnership

Background

Peel Ports Logistics (PPL), part of the wider Peel Ports Group operating multiple port facilities across the UK, provides comprehensive logistics solutions spanning warehousing, freight forwarding, customs clearance and specialist cargo handling. With expertise in managing complex logistics requirements, PPL offers tailored services for projects of all scales, including the handling of oversized and heavy cargo at facilities like Ellesmere Port, where specialised equipment and technical knowledge enable the movement of exceptionally large components for critical infrastructure projects.

Allelys, a leading specialist in heavy transport and logistics, has built a strong working relationship with PPL over the past 20 years. The partnership has supported major infrastructure and energy projects across the UK, including the Lostock Energy from Waste initiative. Located in Cheshire, the Lostock Sustainable Energy Plant will process up to 600,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste annually, generating electricity for thousands of homes while reducing landfill dependency.

Challenge

Delivering such large equipment required for the Lostock plant was no small feat. The project involved transporting a 154.3 tonne turbine and a 132 tonne generator, which required specialised handling, with critical project timelines allowing little room for delay. Last-minute schedule changes affected vessel arrival times, and the operation demanded a seamless transition from port to final site. Any disruption in the logistics chain would risk increased costs and delays to the overall project timeline.

Solution

PPL played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this project. The team at Ellesmere Port worked closely with Allelys to adjust vessel schedules in real-time, avoiding bottlenecks and keeping port operations running smoothly. When unexpected changes arose, PPL adapted quickly to align with Allelys' heavy-lift operations.

Specialist heavy-lift cranes were mobilised precisely when needed, preventing unnecessary downtime and additional costs. PPL also provided secure storage at Ellesmere Port, allowing Allelys to manage the onward delivery schedule effectively. This flexibility gave the project team the confidence to navigate logistical challenges without risking delays or cost overruns.

Outcome

The critical components were delivered efficiently, without costly delays, ensuring the power plant could progress toward its operational goals. The collaboration between PPL and Allelys highlights the importance of a responsive, solution-driven approach in complex infrastructure projects.

With a relationship built on trust and shared expertise, PPL continues to be a key logistics partner for Allelys, helping to deliver critical infrastructure across the UK with reliability and innovation.

Simon Davies, Project Manager at Allelys Heavy, said: “I deal with PPL on a regular basis as Allelys has multiple projects going in and out of Ellesmere Port. I always find the team to be approachable, friendly, and extremely adaptive. Their can-do attitude is refreshing, shows Peel Ports Group in a great light, and makes tasks easier to complete, thus making my job much easier.”
